THE LAST FLY OF FLIGHT 168

VASP Flight 168 was on a scheduled domestic flight from São Paulo to Fortaleza. The flight proceeded normally until the final approach to Fortaleza Airport, during the night.
At approximately 2:25 AM local time, while descending to land at Fortaleza, the aircraft crashed into a hillside in the Serra da Aratanha mountain range — about 25 km (16 mi) south of the airport.
Despite being cleared to descend to 5,000 feet, the captain continued descending well below the minimum safe altitude, even though the terrain in the area was mountainous.
The aircraft struck the mountain at about 2,500 feet and exploded on impact, killing everyone on board instantly.
