USS Leyte Gulf Returns from Final Deployment – End of an Era

The guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) returned to Naval Station Norfolk on May 17, 2024, marking the end of its final deployment. During its operations in the U.S. 4th Fleet area of responsibility, the ship conducted counter-narcotics missions, seizing 6,470 kilograms of illicit drugs and a semi-submersible vessel, while also supporting theater security cooperation efforts.

Commissioned in 1987 and named after the historic Battle of Leyte Gulf in World War II, USS Leyte Gulf has served the U.S. Navy with distinction for nearly four decades. This final return marks the close of an honorable chapter in American naval history.
