In a bold and moving statement that resonated with conservatives across the country, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson reaffirmed the foundational truth that our rights are not granted by governments — they come from God Himself. His words were a breath of fresh air in an era dominated by bureaucratic overreach and secular authoritarianism. But while his spiritual clarity is commendable, his assertion that America was the “first nation in history” to recognize this truth is historically inaccurate and regrettably dismisses the centuries-old legacy of Hispanic Christendom.

Long before the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, Christian civilizations — particularly the Spanish Crown — were grounded in the belief that authority comes from God. The Spanish Monarchy based its entire governance on divine order and natural law, spreading this worldview across the Americas in the name of Christ. America may have codified the concept in its founding documents, but it certainly was not the first to understand it.

Still, Johnson is absolutely right in his main argument: America’s soul rests not in government overreach but in divine sovereignty. The marble engraving above the Speaker’s podium — “In God We Trust” — is more than a motto. It is a line drawn in the sand between two worldviews: one based on faith, liberty, and individual responsibility — the other grounded in atheism, collectivism, and authoritarianism.

The slogan, placed during the Cold War, was a response to Soviet communism and its atheistic worldview. Johnson reminded us that it was a deliberate rejection of Marxism, which inherently denies the existence of God. And he is right — that battle is far from over. The ideology of Marx is alive today in our universities, corporate boardrooms, and public policy agendas disguised as "progress."

To say, “We don’t trust the government — we trust in God” is not just powerful rhetoric. It is a survival guide. History has shown that when governments replace God, tyranny follows. Johnson’s call is a spiritual wake-up for a nation drifting from its foundation.

The task now is action. If Congress is to truly place God at the center, it must go beyond speeches. It must pass laws defending life, family, property, and religious freedom. The time for half-measures is over.

Speaker Johnson's statement is a reminder that America’s greatness does not stem from government power, but from recognition of divine truth. We only ask that he also acknowledge the Christian heritage that laid the groundwork long before 1776.
