The Second Epistle of Peter, commonly known as 2 Peter, is the twenty-second book of the New Testament and one of Peter’s final letters, written around AD 65–68, likely just before his martyrdom in Rome under Emperor Nero. This letter serves as Peter’s farewell message, urging believers to remain firm in their faith, guard against false teachers, and live in anticipation of Christ’s return. Peter also warns that some will mock the promise of Christ’s return, claiming that everything continues as it has since the beginning. He reminds believers that God’s timing is different from human timing, and that a day is like a thousand years to the Lord. He explains that God is patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but for all to come to repentance. However, the Day of the Lord will come like a thief, bringing judgment, destruction, and the renewal of the heavens and the earth.

In light of Christ’s return, Peter urges believers to live holy and godly lives, looking forward to the new heavens and the new earth, where righteousness dwells. He encourages them to grow in grace and knowledge of the Lord, standing firm in the truth while being aware that some distort Paul’s letters and other Scriptures to their own destruction.

The letter concludes with a final encouragement to remain steadfast in faith, a reminder of God’s patience and justice, and a call to be watchful and prepared for the Lord’s coming.
