Rubio SANCTIONS UN Human Rights Expert - Over Israel Genocide In Gaza Criticism

U.N. Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. Announcing the sanctions on Wednesday, against the Italian lawyer.

Albanese, born in Ariano Irpino in 1977, is a human rights lawyer with over two decades of experience in international law and human rights. She has a degree in law from the University of Pisa, as well as a master's in human rights law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas) in London.

The 48-year-old is an affiliate scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University in Washington.

She also teaches a course she designed herself on “humanitarian, legal and political responses to the Palestinian forced displacement” as a non-resident professor at a number of universities, including in Bethlehem, Birzeit and Salento.

Appointed in 2022, the Italian scholar has called for sanctions and an arms embargo against Israel since its full-scale invasion of the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The Israeli government banned Albanese from the country in February 2024 after she publicly stated that “the victims of the October 7 massacre were not murdered because of their Jewishness, but in response to Israeli oppression.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions on Wednesday targeting a top U.N. Human Rights Council official who has been critical of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, alleging the human rights expert has spearheaded a “campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel.”

In a statement, Rubio called Albanese’s efforts to prompt criminal prosecution from the ICC and other actors “illegitimate and shameful.”

“The United States will continue to take whatever actions we deem necessary to respond to lawfare and protect our sovereignty and that of our allies,” Rubio said.
