In the Mayan language, Chichén Itzá means "mouth of the well of the water sages," referring to the Sacred Cenote, the large natural well that the inhabitants of the region considered one of the main entrances to the underworld, home to important gods, such as the rain gods. Furthermore, the name of the site alludes to the Itza, powerful mythical-historical lords of the city during its period of growth and apogee.
