The site covers approximately 70 km² and has more than 6,000 structures. It was once the capital of a regional state of approximately 13,000 km², having been, along with Tikal and Palenque, one of the major regional powers during the Classic period of Mayan culture.

Campeche is located on the Yucatán Peninsula in the southeastern region of the country, bordering Yucatán to the north and northeast, Quintana Roo to the east, the Petén department in Guatemala and Belize to the south, the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and Tabasco to the southwest.
