B. SIX TYPES OF GRACE:
1. COMMON GRACE
a. All humans are born spiritually dead and physically alive. That means that they cannot understand spiritual phenomena, including the gospel. (Rom. 5:17-20)
Corinthians 2:14 “But the soulish man [unbeliever] does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness.
b. Unbelievers cannot comprehend the Gospel, but the Holy Spirit makes it understandable to them. c. We are born totally separated from God and we are helpless to establish a relationship with Him, so He makes contact with us. The work of salvation is the work of God on behalf of each one of us.
d. When an unbeliever hears the gospel given accurately, God the Holy Spirit acts as a human spirit to enable the spiritually dead unbeliever to comprehend the Gospel.
e. As long as you’re alive, the Holy Spirit will “strive” with you to believe the truth. In other words, you have the chance to believe in Christ as long as you’re alive. But if you die without believing in Christ, you will go to go to the Lake of Fire forever.
f. So the striving and convincing work of the Holy Spirit is an important part of Common Grace. (John 16:7-10)
g. No matter how smart you are, as an unbeliever you cannot handle absolute truth. Human I.Q. is not an issue in understanding the Gospel, for we are all born spiritually dead. God overcomes the lowest and highest I.Q. by the grace ministry of the Holy Spirit. None of us could have ever responded to the Gospel without the ministry of the Holy Spirit in Common Grace.
h. Since the Holy Spirit makes the gospel clear and lucid to unbelievers, including His effort to persuade and strive with them to accept the truth. This is not coercion, they use their own volition to either accept or reject the gospel.
i. Most people think that the gospel is difficult to understand, but it isn’t. Those who put their faith alone in Christ alone are immediately saved, but those who put their faith in their own good works rather than Christ’s sacrifice for them on the cross; will spend eternity in hell, separated from God forever.
j. It is very important that when we give the gospel, we give it accurately so that the Holy Spirit can enable unbelievers to understand it and to possibly persuade them to accept it.
k. The Holy Spirit cannot work with an inaccurate gospel. Here are a few ways not to give the gospel:
1. Invite Jesus into your heart
2. Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart (Rev. 3:20)
3. Come to Jesus
4. Give your life to Christ
5. Are you ready to follow Jesus?

l. There is only one thing that the gospel requires of us to do and that is to believe or trust or have faith that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and He paid for all our sins and the sins of the world on the cross. Adding anything to this is not biblical.
Examples:
1. Be baptized
2. Repent of your sins
3. Call upon the Lord
4. Turn from your sins
5. Seek forgiveness
6. Publicly confess Jesus as Lord
7. Persevere in doing good works to the end

2. EFFICACIOUS GRACE
a. Where there is positive response to the gospel, the Holy Spirit takes the faith of the spiritually dead person and makes it effective for salvation through the doctrine of Efficacious Grace.
b. Note that the Efficacious Grace of God the Holy Spirit only makes faith effective for salvation; He does not make any system of human works effective for salvation.
c. The works of the spiritually dead person are dead works. Dead works depend upon the power and ability of the spiritually dead person, who is characterized by total depravity (being morally corrupt), total separation, and total helplessness.
d. It is important to recognize that those who believe that they can make it into heaven by the works that they produce, will definitely spend eternity in the Lake of Fire. This does not mean that God doesn’t want us to do good works, He does, but only after we are saved, never before, in order to be saved.
