Point is that Yeshua did not teach in dark alleys or hidden basements. HE taught in the synagogues, HE taught in the open to many many thousands of people.Yeshua therefore claimed, and rightly so that if HIS teaching was in question, evidence should be heard in the normal way. Meaning there were many thousands of witnesses available.
So instead of apologizing, Yeshua protests against the unwarranted action. If he had spoken amiss, then a formal charge of contempt of court should have been lodged against him. If there was nothing wrong with what he said, then the slap in the face which he had received was an unjustified assault.
The high priest would then perform a ritual in which he would lay his hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites. He would slap the goat ritually transferring the sins of the people to the scapegoat. This goat was then sent outside the city symbolically carrying away the sins of the people. Yeshua was slapped, and HE too was sent outside the city to Golgotha.
As Peter stood and warmed himself by the fire, there were members of the high-priestly household and the temple police doing the same. One of them repeated the question which had been put to him by the girl at the door. Stating that Peter was in the Garden with Yeshua. That Peter was one of them, those who were with Yeshua.
This is the kind of thing that John would know, having connection with the high priest and his household (JOH 18:15-16). The relative of Malchus would pay special notice of the man who attacked his kin. Even in the light of the night fire in the courtyard he thought he recognized Peter as the man who attacked Malchus with a sword from behind.
MAT 26:74, Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. The word for swear is om noo oh = to make an oath…so probably something like I swear I don’t know the man…some say Peter used you know bad words…whatever, but the word implies an oath as I just stated.
