John 17:6-10 Divine Ownership in an Age of Autonomy

Welcome to Covenant Presbyterian Church. Today’s sermon turns our attention to John 17:6–10, where Christ prays not for the world, but for those given to Him by the Father. In a time when autonomy and self-ownership are celebrated, Jesus reminds us that the people of God are not their own—they are chosen, kept, and owned by the Triune God.

This passage, continuing the high priestly prayer, reveals the intimate relationship between the Father and the Son in the work of redemption. Those whom the Father has given to the Son are marked by obedience and faith, not because of human effort, but because of divine initiative. From a Reformed perspective, we see here the unmistakable doctrine of particular redemption and the unbreakable bond of covenantal grace.

Join us as we reflect on what it truly means to belong—not to ourselves—but to God, who calls, claims, and keeps His people.
