Prophet Nuh’s call to monotheism and the rejection by his people
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 104th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,Prophet Nuh’s call to monotheism and the rejection by his people
The story of Prophet Nuh (Noah, peace be upon him) is among the most powerful narratives in the Qur’an that highlight the struggle of a prophet in calling his people to monotheism, patience in the face of rejection, and the ultimate triumph of truth over falsehood. Nuh (AS) was one of the earliest prophets sent by Allah to guide humanity after they had deviated from the worship of the One God. He spent a long time preaching the message of **Tawheed** (the oneness of Allah), warning his people against idolatry and urging them to repent. However, his message was consistently met with arrogance, mockery, and denial by the majority of his people. In Surah Al-A'raf verses 59–60, Allah says: Translation is “Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, and he said, ‘O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day.’ The eminent among his people said, ‘Indeed, we see you in clear error.’”** These verses establish the fundamental message of all prophets: to worship Allah alone. Nuh’s plea was not for personal gain, but out of sincere concern for his people’s salvation.
Despite Nuh’s persistent efforts, his people remained obstinate. He preached tirelessly for centuries, both openly and privately. Surah Nuh verses 5–9 records his words: Translation is “He said, ‘My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day. But my invitation increased them not except in flight. And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] pride. Then I invited them publicly. Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly.’”** This passage shows the incredible patience and strategies Nuh employed in his da’wah (call to Islam). He called them during the day and night, in public and private settings, yet they responded with hostility and rejection. Their behavior—plugging their ears, covering their faces, and turning away—is symbolic of deliberate ignorance and pride.
Prophet Nuh’s mission lasted an astonishing 950 years, as mentioned in Surah Al-‘Ankabut verse 14: Translation is “And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years; and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.”** This remarkable time span underscores the patience of Nuh and the mercy of Allah in giving people ample time to reform. Yet, most of them persisted in their disbelief and idolatry, worshipping false gods like Wadd, Suwa’, Yaghuth, Ya’uq, and Nasr, as noted in Surah Nuh verse 23: Translation is “And they said, ‘Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwa’ or Yaghuth and Ya’uq and Nasr.’” These idols had become central to their society, and abandoning them was seen not only as religious betrayal but also as cultural rebellion. Nuh’s call threatened their social order and personal pride, leading to their defiance.
Eventually, after centuries of rejection and mockery, Prophet Nuh turned to Allah in sorrow and desperation. In Surah Nuh verses 26–27, he said: Translation is “My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant. Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and not beget except wicked disbelievers.” This powerful dua came after persistent rejection and confirmed that their hearts were sealed against faith. In response to this, Allah commanded Nuh to build an ark in preparation for a great flood that would serve as divine punishment. The people mocked him during the construction, as mentioned in Surah Hud verse 38: Translation is “And he was constructing the ship, and every time the chiefs of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, ‘If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule.’” Their arrogance blinded them to the impending punishment, and they laughed at the very thing that would become their doom.
When the flood came, only those who believed and boarded the ark with Nuh were saved. Even one of Nuh’s own sons, who refused to believe, was among the drowned. In Surah Hud verses 42–43, it says: Translation is “And it sailed with them through waves like mountains, and Noah called to his son who was apart [from them], ‘O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers.’ [But] he said, ‘I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water.’ [Noah] said, ‘There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for whom He gives mercy.’ And the waves came between them, and he was among the drowned.”** This tragic moment illustrates that salvation is only through faith, and even familial ties cannot save one who rejects Allah’s message.
The Prophet Muhammad PBUH also referenced the story of Nuh (AS) in Hadith. In a narration from Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 7349, the Prophet said: “The Prophet Noah will be called on the Day of Resurrection, and he will say, ‘Labbaik and Sa‘daik, O Lord!’ Allah will say, ‘Did you convey the message?’ He will reply, ‘Yes.’ Then his people will be asked, ‘Did he convey the message to you?’ They will say, ‘No warner came to us.’ Then Allah will say, ‘Who will bear witness for you?’ He will say, ‘Muhammad and his Ummah.’” This Hadith emphasizes the role of the final Ummah as witnesses over previous nations, and it also reinforces the truth of Nuh’s message and his fulfillment of his prophetic duty.
In conclusion, the story of Prophet Nuh (AS) is a profound example of perseverance, faith, and unwavering commitment to the message of monotheism. Despite facing nearly a millennium of rejection, ridicule, and hostility, Nuh continued to preach the truth, embodying the qualities of patience and trust in Allah. His people’s refusal to abandon idolatry serves as a warning against arrogance and blind adherence to tradition. Through both Qur’anic verses and authentic Hadiths, the legacy of Nuh remains a timeless lesson in the power of sincere da’wah and the consequences of turning away from divine guidance.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
