The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is driving huge increases in energy demand for massive data centers, threatening energy infrastructure and the environment.

Among the biggest consumers are NVIDIA’s AI processors, which use about 10 million kilowatt-hours of electricity daily—roughly enough to power 10,000 homes.

Tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are already launching initiatives to reduce energy use and switch to sustainable sources. For example, Google and CoreWeave signed a $3 billion hydroelectric power deal in Pennsylvania to supply energy for data centers. Meanwhile, Blackstone is investing $25 billion in AI data centers and energy infrastructure.

Despite these efforts, some experts believe energy consumption will continue to rise. Purdue University’s Yi Ding notes that while AI chip efficiency may improve, overall energy use will still increase.

Amid this, U.S. President Donald Trump recently joined an energy and innovation summit to announce a $70 billion investment plan in AI and energy sectors. Major players like Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Exxon Mobil are participating, aiming to maintain leadership in AI, especially against competition from China.

Although AI development demands massive energy, it’s crucial for tech companies and governments to collaborate on sustainable energy solutions to sustain progress while reducing environmental impact.
