On May 19, 1999 John was interviewed by Katie Couric on the Today show— it was for the 10th Anniversary of the Profile in Courage Award, to honor his dad. Katie showed a clip from an interview where JFK talked about hoping his kids would go into public service in some way.

“In retrospect, that’s a very poignant interview. The last television interview. Like most women in America, I had a mad crush on John. He was so handsome, but he emanated humility. I remember he rode his bike to the Today show. And I was a little, what is the word? Dumbstruck? I was kind of nervous around him, believe it or not. He came by himself, and did I mention I had a crush on him? He also wrote me a nice note when [my first husband] Jay died, something about people dying young. He was just so charming.”
