Initially, German propaganda insinuated that each and every German soldier that was encircled went down fighting and fought to the last bullet. Neglecting to tell the German public that almost 90,000 men had surrendered. Of the 90,000 that surrendered in 1943, less than 5,000 would survive captivity and return home.
