So, what did Pilate do next? Clearly the first offer of compromise had not worked so he thought of another. You can’t compromise with truth, something Pilate was slowly learning. So, he says look I’ll punish HIM and then let HIM go. And that’ll keep us all happy. It’ll keep my conscience happy because I’ve let HIM go. It’ll keep their conscience happy because I’ve punished HIM.
The flogging was done with a whip that had a long leather thong with pieces of bone fastened all the way down. A man was flogged until he went mad or died or became unconscious with his back flayed to ribbons. It is a dreadful punishment. 40 lashes was the norm (39) Pilate allowed Yeshua to be flogged even though he knew he was innocent.
Finally, the Jews came out with the real reason. It wasn’t political, but religious. They said, “Look, Pilate, there is a reason. We haven’t told you before now, but this man says HE’s the Son of GOD? And by our law HE deserves to die.”
GEN 22:12-13, “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear GOD, because you have not withheld from ME your son, your only son.”Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
Issac was called Abrahams only son because he (Issac) was in the plan of GOD. He was the son of the covenant promise. Abraham had other sons (6 with Keturah), Isaac was the unique son through whom GOD’s covenant with Abraham would be fulfilled, and through whom the promised lineage of Yeshua was established.
Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. That ram on that very spot wore a crown of thorns. On that very spot Yeshua would be the real sacrifice and HE too would wear the crown of thorns.
The claim to be king of the Jews was a capital offense against Roman law; the claim to be Son of GOD was a capital offense against Jewish law. But if the governor would not grant a capital conviction in respect of the former offense, he might be persuaded to permit the execution of the capital sentence required by Jewish law. A claim to be the Messiah could be considered both as a claim to be king of the Jews and as a claim to be Son of GOD.
To Pilate, the charge of Yeshua claiming to be GOD presented no real immediate threat to the Roman Empire. However, it placed Yeshua in a category of ‘Divine men’ and possibly a a member of that group. If this Yeshua was a ‘Son of GOD’ in this sense, Pilate might well feel a little fear. Still Pilate does have HIM scourged.
ISA 53:7, HE was oppressed and afflicted, yet HE did not open HIS mouth; HE was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so HE did not open HIS mouth.
