Officer and Suspect Injured in Domestic Disturbance Call

On July 12, 2025, around 5 p.m., Amherst Police responded to a domestic disturbance call on the 4800 block of Bailey Avenue in Amherst, New York.

The incident escalated into an officer-involved shooting, leaving both a suspect and an officer injured. Officers encountered 26-year-old Rayquell Grant, who was not supposed to be at the residence. Grant, known to police for prior incidents, jumped from a back window armed with two knives and attacked Officer Aidan Vangelov, stabbing him twice in the shoulder and arm. In response, Officer Vangelov and Lt. Matthew Lobuglio opened fire, shooting Grant in the side and elbow. A taser was deployed but failed to connect. The entire encounter unfolded in just six seconds.

Grant was taken to Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) in serious condition and remains in custody. Officer Vangelov was treated for his injuries and released, expected to return to duty soon.
