P4P - The Postcard Project

The backstory is that about 30 years ago, I started a project called Pedal For Peace, where I rode a bicycle through different countries, handing out postcards. I asked people to write a personal note to a stranger in another country, then I would carry that message to the next destination, find them a pen pal.

Unfortunately, I had an accident in Florence, Italy and the ride ended there, leaving me with hundreds of un-delivered messages. But I’m now working to revive the project and reaching out to some of the schools I visited Spain and elsewhere, hoping they’d like to correspond with kids in English-speaking countries.

Kids (and grownups) loved the idea of making friends in other countries and sharing messages of peace and the teachers liked having them practice their writing skills. I’m also advocating for getting kids interested in real-world activities that don’t involve screen-time (like bicycling and sending postcards via snail mail!).
