Donald Trump’s Israel ambassador Mike Huckabee, of English, German, and Scots-Irish ancestry, demanded Irish lawmakers “sober up” and apologize to Israel for advancing what he called a “stupid” boycott bill that would prohibit trade with Israeli invasion, occupation and genocide.

The blistering rebuke came as Ireland’s Parliament began debate on the Israeli Occupations (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025, a proposal that, if passed, would make Ireland the first European Union country to criminalize imports from Israeli occupations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

"Did the Irish fall into a vat of Guinness & propose something so stupid that it would be attributed to act of diplomatic intoxication?" Mike Huckabee posted on X on Wednesday, invoking a cultural trope.

The Israeli government also condemned the bill, while critics in the United State warn the move could backfire economically, citing decades old American laws barring participation in foreign led boycotts of Israel. Businesses complying with Dublin’s new rules could face federal penalties, including bans on government contracts and even criminal prosecution.

"This could isolate Irish companies from U.S. markets,” warned Mark Goldfeder, head of the National Jewish Advocacy Center.

Still, supporters in Ireland say the legislation as a necessary stance on genocide deemed illegal under international law, a view echoed by a dozen Israeli public figures who signed a letter to the Irish Parliament welcoming the bill.
