November 10, 1975 7:15 in the afternoon, The Edmund Fitzgerald, the reigning heavyweight coal carrier of The Great Lakes was seen no more! With the graves of 29 of her crew the twisted wreck lies on the floor of Lake Superior over 500 feet down and a keening song by Gordon Lightfoot ringing in the ears of the world, the narrative still remains that she was felled by a massive wave and crew error fastening the hatches. No one is allowed near and no recovery has ever been attempted, and massive changes were made shortly thereafter to regulations in GL shipping. So if the crew messed up, why are they making changes?
