Headlines:
Cellphones behind bars and contract killings ordered by inmates have plagued Trinidad and Tobago’s prison system. From chronic overcrowding and poor infrastructure to limited rehabilitation and staff shortages, the prison system is breaking down from within.
My Response:
What's even more disturbing is that both the PNM and the party that I STILL support (UNC), continue to believe that they can use a state of emergency as an effective tool/measure to reduce the corruption and lawlessness which exists in our communities, the prison service, TTPS and the rest of our country's public service. Why are we always so quick to suspend citizens' constitutional rights to freedom of movement and privacy in order to combat a LONG TERM ISSUE such as crime? Is this the new normal? The SAME corrupt and incompetent TTPS is being used during this new SOE, just as they were used under emperor Thanos Rowley's Iron Fist rule, and we yet expect a better outcome now? How naive as a people can we really be?
