October Strings

New song: October Strings — a folk love song with a touch of Eastern influence. I wrote it about my 2004 trip to Shanghai for the Musikmesse, where I was searching for a way to produce my custom fiddler’s bow.
That’s when I met Emily. She was supposed to be a translator — but everything changed.
This song is for her.

[Verse 1]

I wrote a letter, booked a plane

Headed east with bo's and names

Looking for help with tongue and tone

So far from where I called home

[Verse 2]

They said her name was Emily

Sharp as glass and calm as sea

She spoke for me when words ran dry

But we talked more with just our eyes

[Chorus]

And I didn’t know love was waiting there

Between customs lines and autumn air

But the bows I carried led me through

To the start of life with you

[Verse 3]

She told me stories of the port and ships

I watched the way she bit her lips

We drank tea under neon glow

And time moved soft and slow

[Chorus]

And I didn’t know love was waiting there

Between language gaps and foreign stares

But the path I followed with a case in tow

Led me to you — and I didn’t let go

[Outro]

Now every string I tune just right

Reminds me of that October night

The bow was mine, the song was new

But the gift it gave me... was you
