Colorado Springs, CO - Colorado Springs police released the body camera and security camera footage of an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead in the downtown area.

On July 5, police said they got a call about a disturbance at Pikes Peak and Tejon, in the downtown area, during a busy time of night.

Police said they got the call around 1:30 a.m. and that it involved a man holding a gun in the area. When police got on scene, they said they tried to contact that man, but he reportedly ran, reaching into his waistband. That’s when police say an officer shot him, eventually killing him.

That man was identified as 26-year-old Alex Martinez-Sarmiento.

Police initially said they were able to identify Martinez-Sarmiento through use of their Real-Time Crime Center, but added they needed help figuring out what happened before the call about the disturbance.

In body camera footage released Sunday, police provided more details about the use of the RTCC, and showed security camera footage, piecing together what led up to the call. According to police, officers had responded to disturbances with a group that same night, of which Martinez-Sarmiento appeared to be included.

The footage shows the moment officers tried making contact with him. Police said they believe Martinez-Sarmiento put a handgun in his waistband, where they said he reached when he began running from police.
