* Is Mountain Home Reservoir State Wildlife Area Worth the Trip?

1. Located near the town of Fort Garland, Mountain Home State Wildlife Area covers almost 1,100 acres at an elevation of 8,300 ft.

2. It was created in the early 1900s by damming Trinchera Creek.

3. There are two entrances; the main entrance and the south entrance.

4. Fishing: The reservoir is known for fishing. It's stocked with trout during the summer and open for ice fishing in the winter. Northern pike (which were illegally stocked) are also found in the reservoir. Boat ramps can be found on both sides of the lake.

5. Camping: Dispersed camping is allowed in designated areas. Fires are allowed, but must be contained. Pets are allowed, but must remain on a leash.

6. Amenities are minimal. Vault toilets are available, but it's wise to bring your own toilet paper as it may not always be stocked. There is no drinking water, electric hookups, or trash service.

7. Nature Viewing: This area is good for birdwatching with ducks, gulls, loons, and pinyon jays commonly seen. As many as 156 bird species have been recorded.

8. Unfortunately, no hunting is allowed at this State Wildlife Area.

9. Mountain Home Reservoir is open all year. A valid hunting or fishing license, or a State Wildlife Area pass is required for individuals 16 years and older.

So, with your Colorado license plate, you may have purchased the Keep Colorado Wild pass. Unfortunately, this is actually a Colorado State Parks pass and does not grant access to Colorado State Wildlife Areas.

To access State Wildlife Areas, you can go online and purchase either...
* Hunting license (even though no hunting is allowed here)
* Fishing license
* Day Pass = $10
* Annual Pass = $42.91

10. Operating a boat in a manner that creates a whitewater wake is prohibited. So, no waterskiing or jetskiing, but the lake is perfect for both kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding!
