Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell is at the center of a high-profile burglary trial after being arrested in April 2024. Police bodycam footage shows Mitchell inside her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home, dressed in black, after allegedly entering through a basement window. Deputies testified they found her with a backpack containing laptops, a Senate ID, and personal items.

Mitchell claims she entered the home out of concern for her stepmother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, saying she intended to retrieve sentimental family belongings. Prosecutors argue the break-in was deliberate, pointing to evidence like the crowbar left at the window and Mitchell’s admission to police: “Clearly I’m not good at this.”
