🥔 Recipes – Homemade Scalloped Potatoes 🧀

These Homemade Scalloped Potatoes are rich, creamy, and full of comfort. Thinly sliced potatoes layered with a buttery, garlicky cream sauce and baked to golden perfection — it’s the perfect side dish for holidays, Sunday dinners, or any time you want something cozy and delicious!

✅ Ingredients:
2 lbs (about 900g) russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups whole milk (warm)

1 cup heavy cream (optional for extra creaminess)

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for cheesy scalloped potatoes)

Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Make the sauce:
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
Stir in the flour and cook, whisking constantly, for about 1–2 minutes to form a roux (don’t let it brown).
Slowly whisk in the warm milk (and cream, if using), and continue whisking until the sauce thickens — about 4–5 minutes.
Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. If using cheese, stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar until melted.

Layer the potatoes:
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the sauce evenly over the top.
Add the remaining potatoes, then pour the rest of the sauce over them.

Top & bake:
If using cheese, sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar on top.
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Rest & serve:
Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired.

💡 Tips:

Slice potatoes as thinly and evenly as possible for even cooking (a mandoline helps!).

Add sautéed onions or ham for extra flavor and heartiness.

Can be made ahead — reheat covered in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through.
