God's Vineyard - 1

There are several places in the Bible where Israel and God’s people are compared to a vineyard. Usually, the implication is that God is the owner of the vineyard and Israel or people who are “in Jesus” make up the vineyard.

These prophecies and stories are not about growing grapes or making wine. They are all about God’s absolute love and how that love is expressed to various groups of humans. One of the interesting things these vineyard comparisons show is not just God’s love, but how God’s love costs Him dearly in emotional pain. God is empathetic and feels our joys and our sorrows and our pains. When we turn our backs on God or spurn Him, it causes Him emotional pain – like when Jesus wept over Jerusalem. And, because God is love, love is an immutable characteristic of God, then God cannot help but love us no matter how much pain it causes Him.
