Mozambique's main opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane, is in a legal mess for leading massive protests following the disputed October 2024 elections. He has been charged with grave offences like inciting and instigating terrorism, among others. Denying the charges, Mondlane said, he is being persecuted despite an agreement with President Daniel Chapo to end violence from all sides. Calling the Chapo government a "dictatorial regime", Mondlane said he was targeted for challenging "unequivocal electoral fraud". Mondlane claimed victory in the election. However, the official results placed him second after Daniel Chapo of the ruling Frelimo party. The demonstrations and blockades reportedly killed almost 400 people and injured over 600.
