Frederic Remington's Original "Battle of Washita"
Frederic Remington's original "Battle of Washita" (1888) depicts Custer's 7th Cavalry charge on Black Kettle's village in 1868. The quintessential artist of the American West, Remington created the work as the basis for an illustration in Eggleston's "The Household History of the United States and Its People." The book served as household and textbook reading, cementing the tragic event into American history.
By using a grisaille (grayscale) palette and stepping away from his trademark realism, he casts a nightmarish atmosphere on the historic moment. This original oil work eloquently unites two of the West's most enduring figures: Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and celebrated artist Frederic Remington.
