It was almost inevitable after the strain and stress of the previous few weeks in Jerusalem that they would make their way back home. More than that, they were right to do so because Yeshua had told them to go there.As soon as Yeshua rose from the dead, before HE said a word the angels had said, “Go and tell the brothers to go to Galilee. HE will meet you there.
Galilee is said to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. There is something about that little lake, I say little as it is thirteen miles long, eight miles wide, shaped rather like a harp, nestling in the hills of Galilee with the snow-capped Mount Hermon in the background and its source for water. as its backcloth. The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake although it is called the Sea of Galilee.
But after about eight hours of hard work, they had nothing to show for it. That was unusual. Fishermen in Galilee always expected some catch. It was said to be very well stocked…GOD provides. But not here, their nets were empty.
These boats were 27 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. There were different methods of fishing out in the deeper water. In closer to shore here it seems they were still fishing with the net over one side of the boat. Yeshua tells them throw the net on the other side (right side). Notice it is 7.5 feet from one side of the boat to the other…
Peter was rowing and when he recognized Yeshua he was rowing and so would have had very little clothing on. When he recognizes Yeshua he tied his outer garment around his waist and jumped in the water and headed for shore. Not surprising right? The water was probably not that deep at this point but we don’t know, but being a fisherman from the area growing up in and on the water we can assume Peter could swim. The other disciples followed, doing the hard work of bringing the net full of fish with them.
There was great joy amongst the disciples but there was an understandable … uneasiness being in the presence of their risen LORD. There was something quite familiar in having HIM with them by the lakeside, yet there was something quite unfamiliar being in the company of their resurrected friend and LORD.
