In 1976, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi
In 1976, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi — the Shah of Iran — was one of America’s closest allies in the Muslim world.
His point here:
1. Too much power breeds resentment.
When any lobby becomes too influential, it can trigger backlash — both domestically (in the U.S.) and globally.
2. It prevents Israel from self-correcting.
If the U.S. always shields Israel diplomatically, economically, and militarily — regardless of its actions — then Israel may never be held accountable or pushed to pursue peace or justice (e.g. with Palestinians).
3. It distorts U.S. foreign policy.
The Shah feared that blind loyalty to Israel could drag the U.S. into unnecessary conflict or alienate it from the Muslim world — something that could backfire for everyone, including Israel.
