Argentina Announces Privatization of State Water, With Israeli State Firm Principal Beneficiary

President Javier Milei's government formally announces the start of the privatization process for struggling state-owned waterworks AySA.

The government of Argentina have announced plans to privatize the country's water resources, selling it off to foreign firms.

Israeli state-owned water company, Mekorot... accused of complicity in genocidal crimes against Palestine, is in pole position to take advantage.Mekorot has already made confidential deals with 12 Argentinian provinces.

The move is part of far-right "anarcho-capitalist" president Javier Milei's fire sale of state assets. Milei's administration has fired tens of thousands of public employees, shuttered 13 government ministries, and removed price controls on rent and key goods. As a result, poverty has drastically increased.

Internationally, Milei has been among Israel's loudest supporters, designating Hamas as a terrorist group and flying to Israel to support his "dear friend" Benjamin Netanyahu.

In February, 2025, Javier Milei made a special appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) earlier in the month. The Argentinian president gifted Elon Musk a custom chainsaw, which he promised to use to drastically reduce public spending in his new role as the de facto leader of the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Musk and Milei have become close bedfellows of late, the former clearly impressed by the latter’s wholesale slashing of government programs and entire ministries and his anarcho-capitalist politics. If Musk is indeed using Milei’s Argentina as inspiration for his own mission with DOGE, that bodes extremely poorly for the United States. Milei’s rule has led to mass impoverishment of the Argentinian people, the enrichment of the country’s elite, and the vast expansion of a burgeoning police state. Many Argentinians are watching on concerned, seeing parallels between Milei’s tactics and the Trump-Musk administration’s plans.
