Book Reviews: The World's Religions

This weeks book is The World's Religions by Huston Smith. This book is a grab bag of seven of the world's major religions and it is a MIXED grab bag. Confucionism was confusing, partly because I am not at all sure it IS a religion not just a highly influential philosophy and partly because he confuses the evils of Marxism with the strength of Confucionism...what little I understand of Confucionism.

I did learn quite a bit of the basics of Hinduism and Buddhism, not enough to say "OK, I'm good here," but enough to get me intrigued to learn more. Islam, Judaism, and Christianity was cleansed to the point of boredom, although I think I now understand where that old saw about Islam being the religion of Peace comes from. Although, to be fair, Christianity's blood soaked history is not much better. Neither of which is addressed in this highly sanitized version of the history of those religions.
Rather than a cocktail, I picked up a wonderful Amber Ale from Paperback Brewery: Satan Wears Pajamas, tag line "Eternal Damnation is too long to not be comfortable."
