On Saturday, July 26, 2025, a horrific mass stabbing unfolded at the Walmart Supercenter in Traverse City, Michigan, leaving 11 people injured — six in critical condition and five in serious condition, according to hospital officials at Munson Medical Center.

Authorities say the suspect, a 42-year-old Michigan man, entered the store and began attacking shoppers at random with a folding knife. The motive remains unknown, and the suspect's identity has not yet been released.

What could have been an even greater tragedy was stopped by brave actions from everyday citizens — including an armed individual named Derrick Perry who drew his weapon and, along with other bystanders, disarmed and detained the attacker until law enforcement arrived.

A sheriff’s deputy responded within minutes of the 911 call and took the suspect into custody. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect acted alone.

At this time, not all the names of who assisted in subduing the attacker have not been released, but law enforcement has acknowledged their quick and courageous response likely prevented additional casualties.
