Purpose: Vishnu incarnated as Narasimha to defeat the demon king Hiranyakashipu and restore dharma (righteousness) on Earth. Hiranyakashipu, through a boon from Brahma, could not be killed by a human, animal, deva (god), inside or outside, day or night, or by any weapon.
The Story: Hiranyakashipu, emboldened by the boon, terrorized the universe and forced everyone to worship him, forbidding the worship of Vishnu. His son, Prahlada, remained a steadfast devotee of Vishnu, leading to Hiranyakashipu's fury. When Hiranyakashipu challenged Prahlada about Vishnu's omnipresence, pointing to a pillar and asking if Vishnu was present there, Prahlada affirmed it. In anger, Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar, and Narasimha emerged from it. Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu at twilight (neither day nor night), on the threshold of a doorway (neither inside nor outside), placing him on his lap (neither on earth nor in space), and using his claws (neither a weapon nor a hand).
Significance: Narasimha's avatar highlights the victory of good over evil, the protection of devotees, and Vishnu's ability to overcome any obstacle to restore balance. His story reinforces the concept that divine justice will always prevail, and that sincere devotion is always rewarded.
