Is God's Word Relevant Today?
In today's world, many consider that civilization and mankind has evolved since the biblical days. In some ways we have. We have advanced greatly in areas such as technology and science. But in terms of our human nature and human tendencies, we have not changed. Also, the effects of weather, earth's dynamics and animal behavior have not changed.
We experience the same natural atrocities as the biblical days. Flash floods, hail, lightning, wind storms, earthquakes, animal attacks and more.
We experience the same grief, anger, sadness, fear, doubt, and worry. We experience the same famine, war, homelessness and other uncertainties.
We commit the same sins: lust, murder, lies, homosexuality, theft, greed, prostitution, adultery, gluttony, alcoholism, witchcraft, trickery, vengeance, hatred, jealousy, and the list goes on. Paul wrote about such sins existing in his day in Romans 1:26-31.
In spite of the passage of time, the same human tendencies, life circumstances, natural events and tragedies continue to remain the same no matter the current generation.
Solomon shared his God-given wisdom in Ecclesiastes 1:9 "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."
Since there is nothing new under the sun from the biblical days to the modern world, God's Word continues to be relevant. What was relevant in biblical days is relevant in our lives today.
Something else that doesn't change is God and His Word and that is where we can firmly place our confidence!
We read in James 1:17 that God does not change like shifting shadows.
Jesus assures us in Matthew 24:35, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."
David shares this same truth in Psalms 119:89, "Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens."
Apostle Paul teaches in Romans 15:4, "For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope."
Hope. The scriptures were written to provide us with hope. We have one advantage that those living through the biblical days did not fully possess... and that is God's written word from Genesis all the way to Revelation.
So let us cling with faith to the encouragement we receive through God's eternal, everlasting word. We can have confidence that it will always remain relevant in a world where there's nothing new under the sun.
