How to Grind a Stump So New Grass Can Grow
Clear the Area
Remove any rocks, mulch, sticks, or debris around the stump. Make sure nothing will damage the grinder teeth or fly out while working.

Mark Underground Hazards
If you're near irrigation lines, utilities, or anything buried, be cautious. Call 811 to mark underground lines if needed.

Use a Stump Grinder

Rent a stump grinder or hire a pro like Chris’s Stump Grinding.

Position the machine just above the stump and lower the cutting wheel slowly.

Grind side to side, working from the top down, about 4–6 inches below ground level.

Grind out major roots, especially if you're planting grass.

Remove the Wood Chips
Scoop out the grindings and either discard, compost, or use as mulch elsewhere. They’re high in carbon and not ideal for planting directly over.

Backfill the Hole
Fill the hole with topsoil or quality fill dirt. Pack it down to reduce settling over time.

Add Grass Seed or Sod

Rake the soil smooth.

Sprinkle grass seed appropriate for your region and lightly rake it in.

Water daily until it germinates (usually 7–14 days).

Or, lay sod for instant results.

Maintain It
Keep the area watered and avoid walking on it until the grass is well established.

Tip: If the stump was large, keep an eye on settling over the next few months. You might need to add more soil later.
