Israel must face consequences for betraying ‘fundamental values’: Ex-Knesset speaker

Dozens of high-profile Israelis, including former Knesset speaker Avraham Burg, have signed a petition demanding international sanctions to halt Israel’s starvation and expulsion of Palestinians in Gaza. Burg, once a leading figure in Israeli politics as head of the Jewish Agency, told Al Jazeera that the world must impose "severe, personal, and maybe even governmental measures" to stop what he described as a betrayal of fundamental humanitarian values.
He confessed to a moral crisis, torn between patriotism and the obligation to oppose his country’s actions when they violate basic ethics. "When my country abandons its principles, we must act—through protests, vigils, hunger strikes, and cooperation with the global community," Burg said. The petition reflects growing dissent among Israeli elites as Gaza faces famine and forced displacement under military siege.
