Fantasic Four First Steps Movie Review (clip)

Fantastic Four: First Steps works by staying grounded in its comic book source material. It does not add any of the 21st century social or political baggage that other films in the comic book genre add in the name of “updating” the classic story. FFFS allow the “classic” to stay in the classic story. The retro look and feel of the story works. It’s not something that the MCU will necessarily be able to do in every film going forward but it works in this one. What Marvel can and should take away from this film is storylines borrowed from the comics don’t need to be “updated” for modern sensibilities, they need to present versions of those stories that incorporate updated technology into the production, not the telling of the story.
