The Origins of Guinness World Records
This episode explains that Guinness World Records is an annual reference book, first published in 1955, that documents extraordinary human achievements and natural phenomena. It originated from a debate among Guinness Breweries director Sir Hugh Beaver about the fastest game bird, leading him to commission Norris and Ross McWhirter to compile a book to settle such arguments. While it covers various records, the publication notably stopped tracking alcohol consumption records in 1991 due to ethical concerns, making legendary claims like Andre the Giant's unverified. Although only a fraction appear in the annual book, the Guinness World Records database maintains tens of thousands of records.
