Donald Trump recently stated that he ordered two U.S. nuclear submarines to deploy near Russia "just in case" Russia takes any provocative action. This follows a heated exchange between Trump and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, triggered by Trump issuing a 10-day ultimatum demanding an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine — something Russia dismissed outright.

Medvedev responded forcefully on social media, warning that such ultimatums are steps toward war and referencing Russia’s “Dead Hand” system — an automatic retaliatory nuclear strike mechanism. While many in the West interpreted this as a threat, it was more a deterrent reminder: Russia will respond if attacked with nuclear weapons, even if its leadership is taken out.

Trump’s response — positioning submarines — and continued online jabs (echoed by Senator Lindsey Graham) were criticized as impulsive and unnecessary, particularly since Medvedev holds no current official authority. In response, Russia announced the operational deployment of its hypersonic Zircon (“Orsnik”) missiles, which are currently impossible to defend against and could serve as a powerful deterrent short of nuclear war.

Meanwhile, concerns are growing in Russia that the West may be preparing for limited nuclear war, with some analysts citing the return of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons to Europe and past U.S. doctrines hinting at “escalate to de-escalate” strategies. Both the U.S. and Russia reportedly now consider limited nuclear use as a possible option in high-stakes scenarios.

The core warning from the analysis: if either side lowers its mental threshold for using nuclear weapons — tactical or strategic — even as a deterrent, the risk of catastrophic miscalculation grows. A first nuclear use by either side, even a limited one, could spiral into global annihilation. The call is for restraint, diplomacy, and a return to treating nuclear weapons as true last-resort tools — not tactical options.
