Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hit out at the United States' tariffs and backed an 'alternative currency,' speaking at the headquarters of the Workers' Party (PT) on Sunday.

"We want to negotiate on equal terms. Negotiating as equals with the United States is a big thing," he said. "It is the most militarized country in the world, the most technologically advanced country in the world.

It is the most, most, most stable, the largest economy in the world. All of that is very important. But we want to be respected for our size. We have economic interests. We have strategic interests. We want to grow. And we are not a banana republic. Trying to turn a political issue into an economic sanction against us is unacceptable."
