The Ark of the Covenant was the most important piece of furniture in the Jewish Temple. This is where the very Presence of God rested.

But the Jewish Temple that Jesus visited did not contain the Ark of the Covenant. This is because the Ark disappeared just before the Babylonians sacked Jerusalem and destroyed the Jewish temple in 586 BC.

While many believe that the Jewish High Priest hid the ark in the caverns beneath the Temple Mount, many Jews believed that Jeremiah stole it and hid it.
