On February 8th, 2025, around 11:30 p.m., deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress at a home on West Castle Street.

When deputies arrived, they observed two men through a window. One was holding the other in what appeared to be a headlock. Believing someone was in danger, deputies issued commands in English for the men to exit the home and for the individual inside to drop what they believed was a weapon.

The man being held, later identified as Cristian Contreras, had allegedly broken into the home earlier that night after being asked to leave. The man holding him was the homeowner, Jose Luis Lopez.

Investigators later learned that Lopez did not speak English and may not have understood the commands being given. Contreras told detectives that no weapon was involved and that he was unable to explain the situation to deputies.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the investigation in accordance with statewide protocols.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
