The UK's Online Safety Act came into effect this week, and it's been a huge mess. Entire forums, websites, communities, and essential journalism are being censored. People are being forced to scan their faces to use apps like Spotify and YouTube.

Like all these terrible censorship bills, the Online Safety Act claims to protect children from the harms of pornographic and "adult" content. But immediately after it came into effect, platforms began classifying nearly all breaking news images, war coverage, investigative journalism, political protest material, and reproductive and public health information as "explicit" or "harmful," thus preventing access to those under 18.

I describe the consequences of the UK's Online Safety Act, what it means for the future of the internet, and what the US will face if we don't fight to protect free speech online as soon as possible.
