"Iran vs Iraq: 8 Years of War & U.S. Involvement Explained"
5
Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution overthrew the U.S.-backed Shah, sparking hostility with the U.S. and alarming Iraq’s Saddam Hussein. Fearing Shia influence, Saddam invaded Iran in 1980 with U.S. backing, expecting a quick win. Instead, the war lasted eight years, killing about a million and causing regional instability. Both sides used militias and backed internal rebellions. The U.S. controversially aided Iraq while secretly selling arms to Iran (Iran-Contra). The war ended in 1990 without a clear winner, leaving deep sectarian divisions and lasting geopolitical tensions.
