Wat Paknam Bangkok
Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen, commonly known as Wat Paknam, is a royal Buddhist temple located in the Phasi Charoen district of Bangkok, situated along the Chao Phraya River. The temple, established in 1610 during the Ayutthaya period, is a significant site within the Maha Nikaya fraternity and is recognized as the origin of the Dhammakaya tradition. It is renowned for its large size, vibrant community, and prominent religious structures.
Wat Paknam was established during the Ayutthaya period, and received support from Thai kings until the late nineteenth century. Wat Paknam means lock in the canal due to its location. It’s been know but other names over it’s 400 year history but this is the most common name it’s referred to now.
The temple complex features a 69-meter-tall bronze Buddha statue, completed in 2021 at a cost of around 16 million USD, which is one of the tallest Buddha statues in Bangkok and a major attraction for visitors. This statue is positioned in front of the 80-meter-tall white stupa, known as Maharatchamongkhon, which houses Buddha relics and contains an emerald-green glass stupa on its top floor. The temple grounds also include various other significant monuments,.
Wat Paknam has a rich history of revival and development. It fell into disrepair by the early 20th century but was revitalized under the leadership of meditation master Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro, who served as abbot from 1916 until his death in 1959. His teachings and the temple's emphasis on meditation and education attracted a large community, including the largest mae chi (nun) community in Thailand. Following Luang Pu Sodh's passing, Somdet Chuang Varapuñño became abbot in 1966 and served until his death in 2021. He was known for his significant contributions to Thai Buddhism, including leading the Kathina ceremony in 1969 and compiling a special Tipitaka set for King Bhumibol's anniversary. The current acting abbot is Phra Phrom Moli.
The temple is open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM, and entrance is free for both foreigners and Thais.
