Double Dragon II: The Revenge is a beat 'em up video game developed and published by Technōs Japan for arcades, released in November 1988 in North America and December 1988 in Japan.
It is the first sequel to the original Double Dragon, where players control Billy and Jimmy Lee on a mission to avenge Billy's girlfriend Marian, who is shot to death by the Black Warriors leader Willy, retaliating against the Lee brothers after his defeat in the first game.
The arcade version features improved controls compared to the original, replacing separate punch and kick buttons with directional-based attack buttons, and introduces new moves like the Hurricane Kick.
The game is divided into four main missions: a heliport, a lumber storehouse, a farm, and the gang's new hideout, each ending with a boss fight, and includes a variety of enemies with altered appearances and new weapons such as shovels, knives, chain whips, and grenades.

A distinct version of the game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in late 1989, developed by Technōs Japan and published by Acclaim Entertainment in North America and PAL regions.
Despite sharing the same title and promotional artwork as the arcade game, the NES version is drastically different in content and structure.
It features nine stages set in unique locations like a moving helicopter interior and an undersea base, with pre-stage cut-scenes using still imagery and text.
The game supports up to two players simultaneously, a feature absent in the first NES title, and includes three difficulty levels, with only the hardest level granting access to all nine stages and the true ending.
The final antagonist is a nameless martial artist with supernatural abilities, replacing Willy from the arcade version.
The NES version also introduces new special moves like the Hyper Uppercut and Flying Knee Kick, and features a different combat system where players have full access to all moves from the start.

The NES version was re-released on the Virtual Console for the Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U, and was also made available worldwide as part of the Nintendo Classics service on June 12, 2019.
A PC Engine version was released in Japan in 1993, based on the NES version but featuring animated story sequences, voice acting, revamped combat mechanics, and a completely remade soundtrack.
The arcade version was re-released in 2013 as part of the compilation Double Dragon Trilogy on iOS, Android, and Steam platforms.
The game was commercially successful, being listed as the seventh most-successful table arcade unit in Japan in April 1989 and reaching number three on the Atari ST sales chart in the UK in early 1990.
