Oregon Deputy Saves 2 Year-Old From Middle Of Highway

Sheriff's Deputy Jeremy Gautney was driving on
U.S. 101 in the coastal city of Newport on Jan. 9, apparently a rainy evening, when he spotted the 2-year-old running down the middle turn lane toward his patrol car. Gautney quickly stopped his vehicle, got out and scooped up the toddler, the video shows. A big rig passes by in the oncoming lane just seconds later.
The deputy soon learned the child's parents were frantically searching for the little boy, who had escaped from a nearby community center gathering, according to sheriff's Lt. Curtis Landers, who narrated the video. The boy was reunited with his parents and the incident was determined to be accidental. No charges were filed. The Sheriff's Office released the video "not ... to ridicule or question those involved" but to warn drivers that they need to pay full attention when driving as they could face unexpected conditions. "We are very thankful for Deputy Gautney's alertness and quick action that allow for this child's safe return to his parents," Landers said.
