What Is the Transfiguration?
The Transfiguration refers to the moment when Jesus was transformed in glory before the eyes of three of His apostles: Peter, James, and John. It is recorded in the Gospels
What Happened?
Jesus took the three apostles up a high mountain (traditionally believed to be Mount Tabor). There:
His face shone like the sun
His clothes became dazzling white
Moses (representing the Law) and Elijah (representing the Prophets) appeared and talked with Him
A bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said:
“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!”
— Matthew 17:5
Theological Significance
Reveals Jesus’ divinity before His Passion
Connects the Old Covenant (Moses & Elijah) with the New Covenant (Jesus)
Strengthens the apostles’ faith in preparation for His coming suffering and death
Foreshadows the Resurrection and the glorification of all who follow Christ
