NASA plans to fast-track building a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030 to support a permanent human base, amid growing competition from China and Russia.

The initiative, backed by acting NASA head Sean Duffy, aims to secure U.S. leadership in lunar exploration and national security.

However, the project faces challenges, including recent steep budget cuts, technical hurdles, and concerns about political motivations overshadowing scientific goals, the BBC has reported.

While many experts agree nuclear power is essential for sustained lunar habitation, questions remain about safety, logistics, and whether the timeline is realistic without clearer coordination and funding.
